Why Kedarkantha?
Kedarkantha ticks every box for a first Himalayan summit:
- Altitude: High enough to feel like a genuine mountain experience, low enough to be manageable without technical climbing skills
- Terrain: Well-marked trails through dense pine and oak forests, open meadows, and a final summit push on snow (in winter and spring)
- Views: On a clear day, you can see Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, Kala Nag, Ranglana, and the Kedarkantha peak itself
- Season: Best trekked December to April (snow season) or September to November (post-monsoon clarity)
The Route
Day 1: Drive from Dehradun to Sankri (200km, ~8 hours). Sankri is the base village at 1,900m.
Day 2: Sankri to Juda Ka Talab (2,700m). A 4–5 hour trek through dense forest. The lake here is one of the most beautiful campsites on the route.
Day 3: Juda Ka Talab to Kedarkantha Base Camp (3,400m). Shorter day, 3–4 hours. Spend the afternoon acclimatizing and preparing for summit day.
Day 4: Summit day. Start at 4am to reach the summit (3,800m) by sunrise. The views from the top are worth every step. Descend to Hargaon Camp (2,900m).
Day 5: Hargaon to Sankri. Final descent through forest trails.
Day 6: Drive back to Dehradun.
Fitness Requirements
Kedarkantha is graded Easy to Moderate. You should be able to walk 10–15km per day with a 5–8kg pack, and be comfortable with 4–6 hours of continuous walking. Our Trail Starter plan is specifically designed to prepare you for treks like this.
Permits and Logistics
You'll need a forest permit (available at Sankri) and should register with the local forest department. Most trekkers hire a local guide and porter through a registered agency in Sankri or Dehradun.
Kedarkantha is the trek that turns first-timers into lifelong Himalayan hikers. Once you've stood on that summit at sunrise, you'll understand why.
